One Another 2: Live in Harmony with One Another

For Meditation

As we’ve begun our How to “One Another” One Another sermon series we’ve seen that God has called us into community, to be in relationship with other people even though that can often be difficult.

Some of the difficulties come because of the vast differences each of us has with those sitting right next to us! Sometimes those differences can seem insurmountable and we find ourselves either ignoring those different than us, or even being in some type of hostile relationship with those who are different than us.

Obviously this is not what God intended for us in community. He did create each of us differently but not so that we would ignore or dislike others but instead so that our differences would bless each other.  When we’re able to live this way we’ll see one of the hallmarks of Christian community and that is harmony.

Harmony is one of the marks of what God desires for Christian community, that despite our differences we are living together with the same mindset toward one another, the mindset of Christ. When we, by the power of the Spirit, have this we can and will live in harmony with one another.

How are we doing with that as a church? How are you doing with that with those you live with and worship with? How might God be working in you and through you to bring about a harmonious environment at Third?

Romans 12:1-5, 16

1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
